“I heard a very loud bang, and the helicopter seemed to break in half in the air,” said Karen Simmons, a tourist from Chicago who was visiting the High Line. “People started screaming, and we saw it go down right into the river.”
Another witness, Daniel Rivas, who works in a nearby office building, said he saw what looked like smoke trailing behind the helicopter just before the crash. “At first, I thought it was doing some kind of maneuver or emergency landing, but then it just nosedived. It was terrifying.”
